Well Seated. 2

This is another oil painting in response to my feed back on my previous piece; “Well Seated”. I was suggested that I try that sort of environment but with a figure just to make it a bit more interesting. This is the outcome. I love the power the use of blue has in this painting and the way it has an Edward Hopper influence behind it. I also like how it feels that you are in that environment when you look at the piece.

I hope you all like and I shall be posting more through out the next few weeks.

Isolated Man, Pencil and Coloured Pencil

Here is a depiction of a gent that caught my eye whilst I was inside The Playhouse, enjoying a coffee with others. I look outside and there is this figure, all alone and in a world of his own, reading the newspaper. I thought this was very interesting and rather theatrical so I had to depict this scene that I saw. I went with the circle layout again because I still find it interesting after my self portrait. I also used mixed media for this piece, pencil and colour pencil. I coloured the figure in first and thought mid way that it may be interesting to try making the background dark by the use of a HB pencil. I thought this would contrast well with the isolated man and make it portray more that he is alone.

If I could improve on this, I’d work on the figure’s jacket a tad more because I’m not sure about it currently. I might also make the background completely black byt the use of charcoal or black ink.

This term has been very eventful. I’ve been placed in a group to do an exhibition for our BA3 work and I was rather worried at what I’d do because of my work being different from everyone else’s in my group. This is because I have been obsessed with doing social settings and falling in love with coloured pencils. I have never been so comfortable with a medium, I always went from pencil and soft pastel. But now, I’m happy with a medium and feel I could form anything because of it feeling so natural.

Anyway, I went back to my family in the Easter break to relax and refresh my mind for this group project because I was stressing over it so much. This is when it came to me. I watch a lot of news online because it’s a very easy source to catch up with everyday events and my father was sat there reading from The Times and I noticed how much negativity the media feeds on, to scare the public. This is when I came up with doing something news related. This is where i formed my “Shitty People” postcards. I drew out these figures from recent news articles from 2013 and ended up with 30 of them, varying in recognizable figures and people who will probably never be shown again. It interested me that there was more negative than positive. So, this was my final outcome for the exhibition and I was happy. I got a lot of good feedback from this piece which was nice because it wasn’t really a stressful piece, apart from drawing some horrible people.

When it came to our group presentation, I was rather shakey when taking about my work. I don’t feel I explained it well enough. This may be because I had only recently finished the postcards ad didn’t have enough time to come up with a more detailed concept of why I did it, even though it had high praise. I need to think of what makes them interesting and how my interpretation makes the viewer feel.

When it came to my one to one tutorial, I got good feedback for the media postcard. I should and will do more of them. I will also test our my idea of using coloured pencil to see if they become more interesting. I believe they will become more similar to everyday postcards, which is what I want. I also need to learn to be more self-analytical of my work. I need to think about what my work does and how so. Overall, I need to reflect more.

I still social setting pieces because I enjoy doing so but that might be because of my upcoming exhibition in Lincoln with my friend Aubrey, at St. Martins’ gallery. This should be open on the 24th of June and should be good for me. I’ll become more comfortable with the public asking me about my work and this should help me getting over shakes.

Self Portrait, Coloured Pencil

Here it is, my face for all to see in my artistic ways. I started it today and it was rather entertaining drawing my face. This is an image of me in my local coffee shop back in lincoln, Coffee Aroma. I went with coloured pencil because that is the medium I have become most comfortable with and I thought that to be important when portraying myself. I also went with a circular frame instead of your standard portrait format. I did this because I was recently at my friend, Tim Kloed’s home. He’s an Illustrator and I came across some of his pieces which depicted children in these circles. I found them really interesting so I thought I’d give it a go. I like how mellow I look and how it has become this fancy portrait that I can see being in the renaissance era. I like this circle pieces, I think they work rather well and I could extend it with more scenes.

We had a private exhibition

Today we had our private exhibition which was available for all students to see. We had posters placed around the campus and also had a facebook event so people could not miss our group exhibition. Bryony formed the poster that is the first image and I like it a lot. It looks professional and made people come. The only downfall of this was that it had only one image, so the guests did not know what the other members work looked like. Although, if we did have examples of all of the member’s work, I believe the poster would look very messy and unappealing to the public. Overall I’m happy with the poster, it’s very minimal and aesthetically pleasing.

When it came to our exhibition, we got a good response with all of our work. There was no negative feedback and I’m very pleased about that. I’m also happy that a few people liked the layout I chose for my postcards, which has been on my mind since a tutor wasn’t sure about it. But i’m happy.

I’m rather fond of this last image. It’s nice to see people observing your work up close to see all the different figures.

It was also good to see other groups’ outcomes for this project. There was a nice variety of work all around.

Shitty People, 30 Postcards, Pencil

Here is my exhibition piece for our group title “What A Wonderful World?”. This was a mixture of fun and stress. I loved doing all these sketches and going through all these news sources, trying to find figures I see as “shitty people”. They didn’t take long to do which meant I didn’t have to worry that much about a deadline, because I could make several of them in a couple of hours without stressing. My personal favourite is the sketch of the man and his dog. The owner tattooed his dogs and used the excuse of saying it was for “identifying them”. But when you see the tattoos, they can’t be used for identification, which is horrible. I love how the man looks rather upset and the dog hasn’t got a care in the world. One of the downfalls of this piece was that I had to read these articles that made me feel horrible. An example would be a man who sexually abused a 6 month old baby and killed her from it. He said in court that he did not intend to kill the baby. It’s these sort of stories that get put in the news and for what reason?

This is why I made these, a highlight (if you can call it that) on these people who’ve caught the attention for being awful in some way. The cards act as an interpretation on the “wish you were here” idea you tend to get on a postcard, with a lovely image of some landmark. I’ve turned it into, “look at what this horrible person has done”. I hope that these drawings will have amusement and horror to the viewer, by how many there are and how varied the articles are. I think this can have more of a mixed opinion than with a big piece portraying one of these figures.

The layout was a big problem at first but I came to the conclusion of making them into a frame or an “0”. I think this works because it felt natural to do and it gave it some structure. Like you would have with articles in a newspaper. It also means that they stand out more from each other and can be viewed seperately more with ease. If so many viewers go to take a gander at the same time.

Overall, I’m happy with the outcome. It was simple but effective. I’d like to do more of this sort of thing, drawing figures and having a narrative text next to it.

The setting up

Here are some images of documentation presenting the process of putting our group exhibition together. We had one half of this hallway to use t present all of our work and we finally got there. There was a lot to discuss, such as what would look best next to one another. This is so all of our work doesn’t jumble together but stands out from each piece. An example of this was that Bryony’s photos were swapped with my postcards so that we didn’t have a wall full of black and white images, instead we made the wall more refreshing to look at by having the contrast of black and white with colour. We worked together to make sure that our work looked professional and the overall outcome I find very good. We have a nice range of work varying in 2D and 3D, as well as a variety of mediums such as pencil, photo and paint.

Overall, being put into this group was very lucky to have concluded to a theme and make a wide mixture of work revolving around so.

Here they are

These are what I’ve been doing for a couple of weeks. This is my piece/s for our group exhibition, “What a Wonderful Life?”. I call this piece, “Shitty People”. I have been sketching 30 of these awful people that have caught the attention of the media and drawing them on postcards. They are all from this year and have done horrible things from attempting to sell their own children on facebook to raping/ murdering a 6 month baby. I chose postcards as a mock on the “wish you were here” idea that comes with postcards that you send to your loved ones. They’ve turned out really well on these cards and I think it gives the drawings justice as well as making them quirky. I’m not happy about the single portrait layout on the last card and will change it in the next couple of days.

I’ll also share some images of them when they are placed in the exhibition space.

Near The Entrance No.2, Coloured Pencil

Here it is, a sequel. I don’t know why I call it a sequel. I like the idea that i’m forming another piece that relates to a previous piece I’ve done. I love doing these theatrical pieces. I’m very fond of the hooded figure in the foreground also because he is the main interest in this image because we can’t identify him by being able to view his face. I’m also happy that I went with coloured pencil again to for this piece. It always turns out well with these theatrical observations of the everyday. The glass container was a bit tricky because of all the things that consisted in there (plated food) and also getting the reflections correct. It was very technical but worth the effort. I hope to make more of these because they don’t feel like a burden, they feel natural when forming. It must be because I can see resemblances to Edward Hopper. Overall, I’m pleased with the outcome.

These were done a while ago but this is the idea i’m going with for the group exhibition. I’ll draw the figure and the article title, which gives a description of what they’ve done to be a “Shitty Person” in my eyes. I’ll whack some up of the actual postcards soon.

A Self Portrait;

I’m surprised I’ve waited this long. I plan to form a self portrait in the upcoming weeks for the reason that I believe that all painter’s should attempt to do so. You’re painting yourself in your style and people can see who you are and how you depict yourself. That is very interesting to me. Well known painters have done so, such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh, so this should be very interesting. I shall do this piece through the medium of oil paint. This is because I’ve had some good outcomes when using them, especially with indoor settings. There is also a competition on Sky and they ask for you to submit a self portrait. The prize is a comission of 10,000 pounds. Very motivating.
